Damon Albarn - Apple Carts

The man behind Gorillaz performed the new track live with an acoustic guitar on the TV programme on Sunday.

Apple Carts is to feature in Albarn's forthcoming opera Doctor Dee, which focuses on the life of 16th-century astrologist and alchemist John Dee.

Based on Elizabeth I's medical and scientific adviser, the opera will be part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad to be performed by the English National Opera.

It is to be performed for the first time at the Manchester International Festival next month.

Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme, Albarn said: 'It's just amazing how much colour there is in [Dee's] ideas. Just imagine the English now if we had kept that spirit in our hearts.'

Albarn, who is set to perform in the opera, co-created the production with theatre director Rufus Norris.

Doctor Dee is the second opera to be written by the frontman of Britpop legends Blur - his first, Opera Monkey: Journey To The West, was performed in 2007.
